Shaker simplicity meets punk-rock insouciance: Tibi

Designer Amy Smilovic is busy doing a final run-through when I arrive to do a backstage interview. I busy myself by snooping around: lots of black and white with the occasional shot of sky blue. Lots of crisp button-downs, some plush coats.

5:50 p.m.
Smilovic arrives, fresh-faced, wearing white sneakers and an unstructured woolen pinstriped blazer. “Modern meets pastoral,” she says of her new collection, taking a sip of Champagne. “I was thinking of the Amish, but also an urban simplicity. And with all the cold weather we’ve been experiencing, I just wanted everything to be warm and comfortable.” (She also says she’s been listening to lots of Johnny Cash — always a good sign.)

7 p.m.
The show opens with a sky blue felt wool coat worn with black slacks, a long fringed shawl and a flat-topped Shaker hat. Nubby striped sweaters look seductively warm and comfy, and relaxed cuffed jeans are among the best that have appeared on the runway this season. Houndstooth onesies, slouchy menswear blazers, and a deliciously plush red turtleneck sweater-dress round out the collection. You see the Amish influence, for sure, but also a kind of punky insouciance embodied by not only Johnny Cash but also Patti Smith, whom we could see rocking a lot of these looks.

The major trends
Plush knits, loafers, menswear, ponchos

The scene
Cool bloggers (Man Repeller), lots of friends and family — the designer received lots of hearty whoops and cheers and we-love-you-Amys during her bow.

What this will mean for your wardrobe:
Follow Chanel’s maxim and take off one thing before leaving the house to help achieve that Shaker simplicity.
