Urban armor at Tory Burch

The venue for Tory Burch’s show is awfully bright for such an early start time (late night, late deadlines). Anna Wintour, seated front row, really has a reason to leave her shades on.

9:30 a.m.
Burch usually sticks to the Lincoln Center vicinity to show her collections, but finds more artsy spots within the grounds rather than the venues designated for Fashion Week. Today, we’re sitting in the balcony area of Avery Fisher Hall. The crisp morning light shining through the floor-to-ceiling windows highlights the grandeur of the venue. It’s the perfect backdrop for the designer’s fall outing, inspired by the armor her parents collected. Yes, armor. It’s seen in the shiny pleated lamé separates and the big copper belt buckles with chains hanging down that cinch a variety of looks including a dragon print wrap skirt and a multi-textured shearling, tweed and fur coat. But the medieval references don’t just stop there, see the edgy black sweater with chain mail-like embroidery, opulent jeweled detailing on blouses, tapestry prints on the silk dresses and baroque cropped trousers. The thigh-high wool socks and some tough sportier pieces in leather and neoprene, however, bring the more polished looks down a notch from Camelot to, say, the Upper East Side, where the designer resides.

The major trends:

Embellishments galore, edgy-meets-polished, pleated skirts, prints

What this will mean for your wardrobe:

Add some edge to your dressy skirts with thigh-high socks.
