Capes are #Trending, arm function is not
Capes, once the sartorial trademark of swashbuckling pirates and André Leon Talley have reemerged on the fall ’14 runways. People haven’t been embracing the poncho in earnest since the Nineties and blankets aren’t generally considered clothing outside of the Scottish Highlands, but this season the cape in its various incarnations has been everywhere.
First we have the cape proper: they’re dramatic and black at Ferragamo, enchanting and operatic at Dolce & Gabbana, starched white at DSquared2 and infused with Seventies flamboyancy at Topshop Unique.
Then you have the more uniquely seasonal take on the trend: the blanket. Shoulder-sweeping knits were seen everywhere from Etro to Burberry Prorsum and Prabal Gurung. We saw a similarly unexpected rendering of the cape at Thakoon with its prim ponchos and Marni with its shaggy, furry numbers. Arm function is not high on designers’ fall priority list, that’s for sure.
