Internet Week New York: How do you pronounce “GIFs”?
It’s a question as old as time, or rather, as old as the Graphic Interchange Format (GIF for short) has existed.
How do you pronounce the word “GIF”?Steve Wilhite created the GIF when he worked at Compuserve in 1987. Last year, when he received a Webby Award at Internet Week, he put an end to the debate.
“It’s pronounced JIF, not GIF,” he said, according to CNN.
The results? A mixed bag. In our very unscientific study, we found that four of the 11 participants believed the word was pronounced with a hard “g,” while six pronounced it with a “j” — one woman was undecided.
Don’t be embarrassed if you didn’t know how to pronounce GIF – if Internet Week attendees couldn’t get it, then you’re off the hook, too.
