Be aware of your surroundings when you’re riding the subway.
A woman fought off an attacker yesterday morning whom she said tried to rape her at the 23rd Street stop of the C and E line — at a time when overall subway crime is up this year compared to last, according to stats made public earlier in the day by the MTA.
Serious crimes like rape and murder are down, but overall crime is up by about 5 percent this year compared to 2009. Felony assaults and grand larceny, such as someone stealing an iPod, are both happening more frequently underground.
“Grand larcenies still seem to be our No. 1 concern,” said NYPD Transit Bureau Chief Raymond Diaz. “The snatching of electronic devices seems to be our biggest concern with crime.”
Diaz reminded subway riders to be alert when they’re fiddling with an expensive iPad or smartphone, especially if they’re sitting by the door. Thieves can grab a device and then disappear off the train into the crowd.
About 15 percent of total transit crime is “school crime,” crimes that occur between 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and are committed by school kids under 18, said Paul Brown, NYPD Deputy Commissioner.
And even though many straphangers may not like being alone on the subway at night, most subway crimes actually occur between noon and 8 p.m., said Diaz.
