Cleanup snow job?

MTA buses sit stuck off Fifth Avenue after the blizzard dumped some 20 inches of snow.

“You know, from my point of view they get an A-plus. From the public’s point of view we get probably a C-minus, there’s no question about it. The men and women worked very hard, and I can’t take anything away from them.” –Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty

It must be lonely when you’re the only person in New York who thinks the city did an “A-plus” job removing last week’s snow. That’s the grade Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty gave his crews Monday.

Now, even his boss and federal government disagree with him.

“I would give our grade as unacceptable,” countered Mayor Michael Bloomberg yesterday. “We’re not happy with the way we cleaned up the snow. I wish we responded better.”

Doherty’s block in Staten Island was plowed immediately, while neighbors on surrounding streets had to wait days before finally digging themselves out.

“He needs to retract that statement and apologize to all New Yorkers who had to endure this, especially in Brooklyn, Staten Island and Queens, who are offended by that A-plus,” said Queens Councilman Dan Halloran. He told the press last week that Sanitation workers revealed to him a plot to deliberately drag their feet with the snow removal as a push-back against the mayor’s office over demotions and budget cuts. “Over 10 percent of sanitation workers called out sick the Monday after the storm,” he added. “That’s not A-plus work.”

The Brooklyn U.S. attorney’s office yesterday launched an investigation into Halloran’s claims. The Brooklyn and Queens district attorneys’ offices are also investigating.

“Right after the commissioner gave the Sanitation Department an A-plus in snow removal, he went out to buy Giants playoff tickets,” sneered Queens Councilman Peter Vallone. “He’s clearly living in an alternate universe.”
