Mentally ill people should be treated differently by police, advocacy group Rights for Imprisoned People with Psychiatric Disabilities told cops yesterday at 1 Police Plaza.

The group presented a pilot program for specialized response teams that includes increased training for police in de-escalation tactics.

This week, an NYPD lawyer said two cops should have pepper sprayed a mentally disabled man before resorting to shooting him.

History of violence

Officers Dawn Ortiz and India Archie shot Gilberto Blanco, 45, in 2008.
