Mayor Bloomberg can brag all he wants about jazzing up Times Square with plazas and catered food, but most New Yorkers still say they wouldn’t be caught dead in the Crossroads of the World.

“If I can, I’ll avoid it,” said Victor Vasquez, 24, a student from Washington Heights who treks through Times Square at least three times a month. But Vasquez said he travels through Eighth or Fifth Avenue to avoid  crowds.

“A lot of the things in Times Square make you feel like you’re not in New York,” Vasquez said. “Even if you’re from New York, you feel like a nomad.”

Last week, Bloomberg announced the results of a Health Department study that indicated the air quality in Times Square is cleaner since the pedestrian plazas were installed. But some residents can’t help but wonder whether if it’s worth the cash.

“The city should spend more money on fixing potholes and less on these little islands in the middle of streets,” said Sandy Reyes, 34, a secretary from Yonkers. “A lot of New Yorkers don’t even come here.”

Even the tourists bashed the streets they strolled yesterday. “Times Square is so overrated,” said Brenda Clifford, 47, a homemaker from Boston.

“It’s crowded, and we have all the stores in our local malls anyways.”
