New Yorkers, beware: Hiring a tired pup to sniff out bed bugs in your apartment can mean missing an infestation, warns one business owner who offers this unique service.
George Shea, of Bed Bug Super Dogs, will propose new industry standards at a meeting today of the Real Estate Board of New York, he told Metro. The powerful coalition of building owners will hear new rules to keep bed bug dogs fresh on the scent.
Shea said dogs working an eight-hour day should be given a two-hour daily break.
The main problem, Shea said, is in commercial office spaces. There, trainers need time for everything from ensuring the dog doesn’t swallow staples to sniffing each cubicle crevice.
Dogs should be limited to no more than six hours in commercial office inspections and should only inspect about 50,000 square feet a day, said Shea. They also should work only five days a week.
