New Yorkers created a symphony of humming cell phones yesterday on Wall Street.
About 30 people brought their iPhones to Wall and Broad streets, where Make Music New York and Metro helped sponsor a cell phone symphony flash mob.
Users downloaded the GROUP application and met outside the New York Stock Exchange, all holding out their phones, which played the same composition at exactly 12:45 p.m.
The event was the brainchild of Aaron Siegel, 34, a composer who designed the event with 216 notes, all rising and falling together in a chorus of cell phone chimes that lasted for 10 minutes.
Participants huddled together on the corner, holding their cell phones toward each other. Brooklynite Meagan Fisher, 25, came to the event after reading about it on Twitter and wanting to join in the group music.
“It seemed to swell and get bigger,” she said. “It was really cool how everyone got quiet and referential.”
