State Sen. Ruben Diaz, D-Bronx, is proud of the fact that he’s the only Democrat who voted against historic gay marriage legislation when it passed in New York late Friday night.
Diaz is one of 29 state senators who opposed the gay marriage bill that passed by a slim 33-vote majority.
“I always knew it would pass in New York, and if they allow it here the whole nation goes. But I am Christian first and then a Democrat,” he said. “I always vote my conscience.”
Diaz, a Pentecostal minister, warned that now that gay marriage is legal, it is a sign of the coming apocalypse.
“They say in the Bible all these things will come to pass. They say there will be a time when good is bad and bad is good,” he continued. “I say the end is coming and they laugh at me, but the Bible calls on the faithful not to give up.”
Diaz placed the blame squarely on Republicans in the state Senate for making New York the sixth — and largest — state in the nation to legalize gay marriage.
“All Democrats do is abortion and gay marriage, but the Republican party has always been the party that protects traditional values and family values,” he said. “I’m disappointed with them and [Senate Majority Leader] Dean Skelos. They lost their vision and became a tool of the Democratic party.”
Power to the Tea Party?
Diaz warned that New York voters who agree with him may look elsewhere in upcoming elections due to their disappointment with state Republicans. Nearly 60 percent of voters support gay marriage, according to the latest Quinnipiac poll. “Republicans are giving power to Sarah Palin and the Tea Party. They are making the Tea Party stronger in New York state,” he grumbled.
