Careers and Beers: Networking event lets young professionals schmooze with booze

Dozens of hopeful job hunters will meet Wednesday for a night of booze, business and budget balancing.

The gathering, called “Finding Your Balance: Young Professionals in the Bean Strive for Work/Life/Money Balance,” is part of Career Moves‘ Careers & Beers tri-montly networking events. Young professionals will schmooze, meet experts in career counseling, and life coaching and learn to navigate office politics, and tackle their personal finances.

Some of the younger clients of Career Moves, a division of the career development nonprofit Jewish Vocational Service, have said that balancing work and life is a high priority for them when considering a job offer. According to organizers, this differs from previous generations, who expected to work more than 40-hours a week at first and then work their way to a typical “nine to five” schedule.

“The quest for balance is complicated in the face of abysmal employment rate for recent grads and young professionals, which is why (Wednesday’s) event will focus on finding work/life/money balance,” said Alyson Weiss, a social media specialist and young adult outreach coordinator for Career Moves.

Career Councilor Martha Plotkin is one of four panelists to speak at Wednesday’s event.

“I’m going to try and get people to think about themselves in terms of their careers,” said Plotkin. “They should think about their skills, and clarify what their work place values are.”

Although the Boston-area job market has had a resurgence in recent years, Plotkin believes there is still discouragement among job hunters.

“Especially among that young demographic. Hopefully (Beers and Careers) helps them realize that they’re all in this together.”

Doors open at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and the event runs until 9:30 p.m. at 126 High Street, near South Station. Pre-registrants pay $8 and receive free beer, snacks, and the opportunity to win door prizes. Sign up here.
