New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan was questioned for three hours on Wednesday about cases of sexual abuse of children by priests, the New York Times reports.

Dolan, who was previously the Archdiocese of Milwaukee for seven years, was deposed by lawyers representing hundreds of individuals who say they were sexually molested by Milwaukee priests.

Lawyers asked Dolan when he learned about allegations against certain priests and when he made those allegations public. A spokesperson said Dolan cooperated fully with the deposition.

A total of 575 people have filed claims that they were sexually abused by clergymen of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Lawyers of victims claim that Dolan and other previous archbishops intentionally stalled time so that cases would fall beyond the statute of limitations.

The deposition came a week before Dolan is scheduled to leave for Rome to participate in the conclave to elect a new pope.
