As part of the statewide White Ribbon Day Campaign sponsored by Jane Doe Inc., Revere, Everett and Chelsea are calling on men in their communities to help put an end to violence against women.

Tonight, city proclamations for White Ribbon Day will be issued in those towns, and men who attend will be asked to wear a white ribbon and join in taking the Massachusetts White Ribbon Day Pledge to be part of solution in ending violence against women, according to organizers.

“Violence against women is a violation of human rights – and these abuses around the world and here in the Commonwealth are obstacles to efforts for peace and gender equality in all societies,” said Jane Doe Inc. Spokeswoman Toni Troop. ” Jane Doe Inc. has launched this campaign in Massachusetts because it believes that most men want to help end this violence by speaking out for positive masculinity and human rights, for equality and for the safety and liberty of survivors everywhere – regardless of gender, gender identity and sexual orientation.”

Over 450 men in Massachusetts have already signed on as White Ribbon Day Ambassadors and over 70 communities have signed on as White Ribbon Day Affiliates, according to Troop.

White Ribbon Day Campaign Co-Chair Jarrett Barrios explained why cities and towns have been invited to join this campaign: “By issuing a proclamation, our municipalities are making a public pledge to be part of the solution in ending violence against women. I reached out to these men because I know that they share my belief and commitment that as men we have a critical role to play in supporting survivors, holding offenders accountable and preventing violence.”

Jane Doe Inc. will host the 6th annual statewide Massachusetts White Ribbon Day on Thursday, March 7, 2013. For more information about the campaign, visit: www.janedoe.org/whiteribbonday.

Tonight’s proclamations will take place at:

6 p.m. – Revere City Council Chambers
7 p.m. – Chelsea City Council Chambers
7:30 p.m. – Everett City Council Chambers
