Mass. police sign up for round-the-clock ‘Tweet-a-thon’ to show off savvy social media skills
With police departments all over turning to social media to promote their work, four departments in Massachusetts are among dozens that have signed up for a March 22 round-the-clock Tweet-a-thon that so far features law enforcement agencies from the U.S., Canada, the U.K, Sweden, Iceland and Australia.
The State House News reported today that departments in Burlington, Chelsea, Methuen and Wellesley are signed up to join more than 90 agencies in the effort, including departments from Peoria, Arizona to Beverly Hills, California.
Police everywhere are increasingly using social media to keep residents informed about their work, provide updates during emergencies, and to extend a new avenue for information to flow back and forth.
In a statement, Lauri Stevens, founder of LAwS Communications and organizers of the Global Police Tweet-a-thon, said, “We hope it sends the message to non-law enforcement that their police officers are up to speed with social media, and that they should use the channel to talk with police officers and to be stewards of public safety.
Agencies will use the hashtag #poltwt on March 22.
