VIDEO: Mayor Michael Nutter responds to Philly mag’s ‘Being white in Philly’

Mayor Michael Nutter called Philadelphia Magazine’s “Being white in Philly,” piece ”disgusting and stainful.”

Speaking at the 27th Annual Madam CJ. Walker Awards Luncheon, a National Coalition of Black Women event on Saturday, Nutter challenged the story’s author, Robert Huber, “to come to this event and see some positive folks doing some positive things in this city.”

“Taking care of their business, taking care for their families,” Nutter continued. “Employed. Educated. You might want to learn the rest about this great city and its diversity. And so l I think everyone should be offended that someone would have the audacity to let out of their mind and into print, such disgusting, ignorant comments.”

Huber’s story, which was printed in the March issue, detailed the middle-aged writer’s take on the white populations’s relationship with the Black, non-hispanic population in the city.

The piece has received brutal reviews, even from fellow writers.

The magazine’s editor, Tom McGrath, wrote in his editor’s letter in the March issue, that “when race is written about, it’s generally done from the point of view of African-Americans.”

“but to pretend that white people don’t also have thoughts and feelings about the issue is dishonest,” he wrote.

The nonprofit Philly’s Black Intellectuals has challenged Huber to participate in a debate celebrating “Being in Philly” at Love Park on March 20 at 7 p.m.
