For the first time since 1950, more people are moving to New York City than leaving it, the city reported Thursday.

“We’ve learned great news of the single most reliable indicator of our city’s health,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Based on data independent of the 2010 census, the record high population of 8.3 million marks a 2 percent increase since 2010.

Although every boro increased in population, Brooklyn had the most growth with 60,900 more residents than just two years ago.

The mayor cited record-low crime, increases in jobs, higher graduation rates and longer life expectancy as attracting the new residents.

Population and quality of life in the city reached a low in the 1960s, said Dr. Joseph Salvo, director of the city planning population department.

He added that the new data reflects a six-year trend of migration to the city.
