City urges ‘family-friendly holiday’ for Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day

City officials urged those celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Boston to participate in a ‘family-friendly holiday’ and reminded people that liquor stores and bars will not stay open into the night.
Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration and parade is known around the nation and world and attracts people from all over to participate in the revelry.
To discourage any negative behavior, the city issued a notice that urged those celebrating to do so responsibly. Liquor stores will be closing by 4:30 p.m. Sunday and bars will by 7:30 p.m.
Police were expected to increase patrols not only around the parade route, but also at bars and drinking establishments.
“There’s no place like the City of Boston when it comes to St. Patrick’s Day traditions and celebrations,” Mayor Thomas Menino said in a statement. “We’re working hard to provide a festive, fun, and family-friendly atmosphere for all to enjoy, and we hope residents and visitors alike will join us in that effort.”
People were encouraged to take the MBTA Sunday. Various road closures were also put in place because of the parade.
