One person was killed and eight people were injured this weekend in four unrelated shootings, two unrelated stabbings and a suspicious death discovered at a waste management plant. Two police officers were also hospitalized with relatively minor injuries after a stabbing early Friday morning led to a police pursuit that ended in a crash.

Stabbing sparks chase, crash

A man is in critical condition and two officers are recovering from injuries after a stabbing early Saturday morning in the Northern Liberties area resulted in two responding officers T-boning a civilian vehicle in a crash that damaged two parked cars and a South Philadelphia property.

Police said a 31-year-old man was stabbed three times in the back around 2:40 a.m. at Front Street and Fairmount Avenue. A private vehicle dropped him off at Hahnemann University Hospital, then sped away.

Two officers were then injured as they rushed to the scene of the crime. Authorities said a cruiser was traveling from South Philadelphia when at Christian Street and Delaware Avenue, the officers saw a car believed to have been involved in the crime and began pursuit.

The chase took the officers south down Third Street until they reached the intersection of Jackson Street, where the squad car T-boned a civilian car as it traveled west, according to authorities.

The police car went on to hit a parked car, sending it careening into a second parked vehicle and then smashing into a property on the 2200 block of South Third Street. Investigators said both the squad car and the car initially struck were badly damaged, while the two parked cars sustained relatively minor damage.

Both officers in the patrol car were taken to Methodist Hospital, one with complaints of knee pain and the other with neck pain. The officers as of Saturday were expected to be treated and released.

Police said they have not yet caught up with the suspect who sparked the chase.

Seven more injured in shootings, stabbing

In addition to Saturday morning’s stabbing victim, at least seven more people were injured this weekend in four unrelated shootings and one additional and unrelated stabbing.

A 27-year-old man was shot in the left side shortly before 10:15 p.m. Friday night on the 200 block of North Robinson Street in West Philadelphia. Police said the victim is in stable condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Investigators recovered a weapon, but no arrests have yet been made.

Two people were injured early Saturday morning during a double shooting in the 5800 block of Pentridge Street in Kingsessing. Investigators said gunfire rang out shortly before 5 a.m., striking a 31-year-old woman in the lower back and a 45-year-old man in the forearm. Both victims are in stable condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

A man was hospitalized in serious but stable condition after he was shot in the lower back Saturday night. Officers found the 33-year-old man around 10 p.m. at the intersection of Mascher and Cambria streets in Fairhill. Investigators have not determined exactly where the shooting occurred.

A woman was in critical condition at Albert Einstein Medical Center after being stabbed inside a Burlholme apartment. Police said the victim, 20, was stabbed in the chest and right arm around 10:40 p.m. inside an apartment on the 7000 block of Rising Sun Avenue. Investigators recovered a weapon, but no arrests have yet been made.

Two men were in critical condition at Temple University Hospital after a double shooting early Sunday morning inside a Kensington bar. Police said shots were fired around 1:15 a.m. on the 3400 block of North Water Street. One man, 43, was shot in the head and a second man, 28, was shot in the leg. Investigators recovered a weapon, but no arrests have been made.

Waste workers find discarded body

Police are investigating the discovery Saturday afternoon of a body inside a Holmesburg Waste Management plant.

Investigators said workers at the Philadelphia Material Recovery Facility located at 5201 Bleigh Ave. made a grisly discovery shortly after noon.

Two employees found the body of a 60-year-old man inside a pile of paper recyclables. He suffered a broken right leg and facial injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. There is no word yet on an exact cause of death.
