Same-sex marriage rally today on City Hall Plaza

gay marriage same-sex rainbow flag doma rally

Hundreds of people are expected to attend a rally at City Hall Plaza on Tuesday afternoon to voice their support for same-sex marriage.

The rally is timed for the same day that the U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments on the issue. On Tuesday, the justices began hearings concerning California’s Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage in the state. On Wednesday, the justices will hear arguments about the Defense of Marriage Act, which denies federal benefits to same-sex couples.

Tuesday’s rally will feature several speakers including Mayor Thomas Menino and members of MassEquality, the grassroots rights organization that helped create the event.

“Momentum is on our side — a bipartisan majority of Americans recognize that the ability to marry the person you love is a constitutional right. But now is the time to stand up and show your support for marriage equality,” MassEquality said in a news release.

About 400 people said they planned to attend the rally on a Facebook page about the event. The rally will take place at 3 p.m.

The state Supreme Judicial Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage in 2003, making Massachusetts the first state to recognize gay marriage.
