Advocates call for action from Sen. Pat Toomey, now key in gun law reform

Anti gun violence advocates are on Tuesday joining with Mayor Michael Nutter and former Gov. Ed Rendell to rally outside U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey’s Philadelphia office.

They’re calling on Toomey (R–Pa.) to stand up for universal gun sale background checks, a provision contained in a Senate bill that’s already been introduced but hasn’t received Republican support.

“For a long time the Democrats in the Senate have been looking for a strong Republican partner and we’ve been calling on Sen. Toomey for a long time to be part of this,” CeaseFirePA director Shira Goodman said.

“He’s been noncommittal. His emails and responses since Newtown have always certainly recognized the Second Amendment but he’s also said there should be common ground in the President’s plan and he was looking at that.”

Toomey has been discussed in recent days with increasing frequency as a key figure in pushing through legislation that has a chance at garnering bipartisan support.

He is reportedly reaching over the aisle to work out a gun law reform package with Sen. Joe Manchin (D–W.Va.).

“Now that bills getting are to the floor, we’re calling on legislators who haven’t committed to commit,” Goodman said.

“I think that’s why we started the event but the last couple of days it came out [Toomey] may be having meetings with his Democrat colleagues forming a package that could get bipartisan support.”

Goodman said she’s “optimistic” such a deal can be reached.

“I’m hopeful tomorrow morning instead of asking Sen. Toomey to do something, I’ll be able thank him.”

The event will kick off at 10:30 a.m. outside Toomey’s office at 1628 John F. Kennedy Boulevard.
