Within minutes of the announcement of Margaret Thatcher’s death this morning, abusive comments from her opponents celebrating her death began appearing on the Internet.

Thatcher was a divisive figure in the U.K. She broke the country’s powerful unions that had all but wrecked its economy in the 1970s, forcing the British government to beg for a handout from the IMF in the mid-’70s.

Within a decade, thanks to Thatcher’s economic reforms, the British economy was a global powerhouse.

But it came at a cost. Unemployment in many industrial and working class areas of the country rose to record levels, with many still feeling the effects of the reforms more than three decades later.

The left-wing Guardian newspaper opened its website for comments and was inundated with contributions within a few minutes.

Many of the comments were abusive.

One poster, Maidinchina, said: “She was England’s Hitler.”

Another posted, “DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD. HUZZAR!”

And a third, WarrocketAjax, wrote: “Time to get the champagne in. It’s party-time.”

Another, rcourt13864, wrote: “I put a bottle of something very decent in my fridge the last time she was threatening to croak – will open it with dinner tonight! Typical of the old bitch not to die on a weekend – then I could really go and get hammered!”

Other posters on the site voiced their disgust and outrage at the abuse.
