A newborn baby was found early this morning in the backyard of an Allegheny West home, according to police.

Officers around 5:30 a.m. responded to a home on the 2900 block of North Bonsall Street.

They were met by a woman holding an infant. She told police her daughter, 19, had just awakened her to say she heard a baby crying in the backyard.

The two women went outside, retrieved the newborn and called 911.

Police soon determined the 19-year-old to be the infant’s mother.

In an interview at Temple University Hospital, the young woman told police she was taking a bath around 4:30 a.m. when she felt pressure.

She got out to use the bathroom, saw blood and realized she’d delivered a baby, according to police.

The 19-year-old cut the umbilical cord, wrapped the infant in a sheet and left her in the yard before telling her mother she heard the cries.

It is unclear why she put the child outside.

The healthy six-pound newborn was taken by medics to Saint Christopher’s Hospital for Children, where she is in stable condition.

The mother suffered heavy bleeding and was taken by police to Temple University Hospital, where she is also in stable condition.

There is no word on whether charges will be filed in connection with the case.
