Since Monday afternoon when two bombs went off simultaneously at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, we’ve seen remarkable acts of kindness from people all over the world.

As the identities of victims are revealed we’re learning more and more about who these people are and why there were at the marathon on Monday.

Celeste Corcoran and her daughter Sydney were at the finish line, like many others, to cheer on a relative who was running the race. They were there near the four-hour mark when most runners complete the marathon. That’s when the two bombs went off with shrapnel tearing through their legs.

Celeste, who works as a hairdresser and relies on her legs to do her job, had both her legs amputated below the knee. Her daughter Sydney also suffered severe injuries and massive blood loss. Both women were taken to Boston Medical Center.

Celeste and Sydney, like many victims of the attacks, will likely face extremely expensive medial bills. The subsequent treatment and recovery will also be very pricey.

To help the Corcoran family, Celeste’s cousin Alyssa Carter, started a crowdfunding campaign the day the two were injured.

In just one day the campaigned has raised more than $200,000. By Thursday afternoon the amount increased to $300,000.

Similar campaigns have been created for other victims of the attack including Jeff Bauman, the man caught by photographs with severe injuries to both his legs. He was photographed being pushed in a wheel chair by Carlos Arrendondo. Bauman had both of his legs amputated and people have donated almost $90,000.

The Corcoran family fundraising caught the attention of TV host Chelsea Handler, who donated $25,000 of her own, Carter told Mashable.

“It’s amazing what people can do,” Carter said. “I’m just so grateful – there are no words for us to express our thanks enough.”
