A Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus police officer was shot and killed Thursday night and a reported carjacking led to dozens of police officers, several FBI agents and SWAT units converging on Watertown, Mass. It was unknown as of 2:30 a.m. Friday if any of the activity in Cambridge and Watertown was connected to the apprehension of suspects from Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing.

There were reports of gunfire and explosions in Watertown around 1 a.m. Friday and Boston’s NBC-affiliate WHDH-TV captured, on video, police with their guns drawn toward a man lying face down on the street with his arms raised and his legs crossed.

WHDH reporter Adam Williams was on the scene in Watertown and told viewers on-air, “EMT told me, ‘get back, there’s a hand grenade.”

A Mercedes was reportedly highjacked at Kendall Square in Cambridge and Watertown police chased down the car, according to WHDH.

At approximately 10:20 p.m. Thursday, shots were reportedly fired on the MIT campus. An MIT police officer was reported dead shortly after.
