Dan Sweeney will get plaque at Fox Chase rec center

Dan SweeeyThe first of two memorials for departed firefighter Dan Sweeney will be unveiled this weekend.

A plaque, which will hang on the red clubhouse and snack bar that rides along the third baseline of Field 1, will be dedicated Saturday at 11 a.m.

“Danny Sweeney epitomizes Fox Chase,” said City Councilman Brian O’Neill, who represents the Northeast section of the city. “And (the playground) is the cornerstone of Fox Chase.”

Sweeney and Lt. Robert Neary were killed on April 9, 2012 after a wall collapsed at a Kensington fire.

Field 1, the largest of the four diamonds at the upper fields of Fox Chase Playground in the Northeast Philly neighborhood, will be dedicated to Sweeney on June 23. A sign will be placed behind the backstop, where he played catcher for his Fox Rok baseball teams.

The second annual softball tournament, which raises money for a scholarship in Sweeney’s name, will be played on the same day. His brethren of the Engine 56th firehouse will be the first to play on the field after it’s dedicated.

Neighbors lobbied for the past year to honor Sweeney, pushing for an appropriate memorial for a fallen hero.

All the while, the Sweeney family still wishes they could rewind the hands of time.

“It’s a nice thing to honor him, these things are all nice,” said Sweeney’s father, Dave Sweeney, a retired fire captain. “But we still miss him everyday.”
