Registration opened Wednesday for the Boston Athletic Association’s first race since the Boston Marathon.

The annual B.A.A. 10K is set for June 23 in Boston’s Back Bay. The 6.2-mile race starts and finishes on Charles Street near the Boston Public Garden.

Registration had been delayed by one week. The field limit is set at 6,500 runners, according to BAA spokesman Marc Davis.

Approximately 2,000 are already preregistered by way of signing up for the 2013 Distance Medley, which includes the B.A.A. 5K, B.A.A. 10K and the B.A.A. Half Marathon on Oct. 13.

“We can only say that registration is going very well for the remaining (approximately) 4,500 spots on our first day, and that limited spots remain as of 12:30 p.m.,” Davis said.

When asked whether there will be additional security at next month’s event, Davis said, “We have received a tremendous amount of support from the Boston community, the nation as a whole, and in general the entire running industry. We can only imagine that that will translate into continued support for our future events. We do not comment on security issues within our events.”

The race begins on Charles Street, winds down picturesque Commonwealth Avenue and Bay State Road as far west as Babcock Street near Boston University, before heading back on Commonwealth Avenue, around the public garden and finishing on Charles Street.

A total prize purse of $29,400 will be distributed to the top finishers overall and in the masters and wheelchair divisions.
