VIDEO: Governors Island building implodes
The tallest building on Governors Island is a pile of dust and concrete after a controlled explosion demolished it on Sunday to make room for a new park.
Around 100 onlookers had gathered by 7:30 a.m. to watch the demolition. It took more than 200 pounds of dynamite to bring down the 11-story building. Building 877, as it was known, had been vacant since 1996 after housing members of the Coast Guard, according to DNAinfo.
The incoming 30-acre park will include a couple of ball fields and a public art space. It is slated to be completed by the end of this year.
