A smile earns MBTA passenger $50 at North Station

Judy Colon may just be the most bubbly, bushy-tailed MBTA passenger out there, and on Wednesday, after countless smiley commutes, it literally paid off.

The 23-year-old mother of two was with her young daughter at North Station around noon when suddenly she was approached by an older man who had some good news for her.

“He said, ‘This might sound weird, but I set myself to a good deed. The first person that smiles at me will get $50, and you’ve won,’” said Colon, a Roslindale resident.

He handed her a crisp fifty, told her to “Keep smiling,” and walked away.

She was in such utter disbelief that she hardly had time to adequately thank him.

“I was in such shock, I would have asked him his name, but he walked away so fast. It was such an amazing, inspirational gesture, and I just want to extend my thank you.”

It goes without saying that Colon doesn’t always encounter the most pleasant commuters on the Orange Line, which is her daily route, however she doesn’t let the negativity get her down.

“I’m always smiling, and I always try to be nice to people. There is no reason to show the world that you’re upset. Everybody deserves kindness.”

Colon said she is considering doing a similar gesture to pay it forward.
