Former President Bill Clinton will visit Philadelphia next week to attend a series of panel discussions about the need for greater cooperation between state and federal governments when it comes to financial policy.

Clinton is scheduled to appear at the National Constitution Center Tuesday, June 25, to deliver the keynote speech at the State Budget Crisis Task Force-led event, described in a release as “a national dialogue on the eroding state of Federalism.”

Two back-to-back panels will bring together some of the nation’s brightest minds to collectively brainstorm possible organizational and legislative solutions to challenges currently surrounding the issues of state and federal budget agreements and tax policies.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is also slated to speak at the event, giving a speech detailing how fiscal challenges faced by state and federal governments impact cities.

Former Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell will introduce Clinton, who is scheduled to deliver the keynote speech at 12:15 p.m.

Following the dialogue, the Task Force will issue a final report with recommendations participants developed during the discussions.

The event is the last in a series of national dialogues the State Budget Crisis Task Force has hosted over the past several months.

Other discussions have addressed looming risks posed by underfunded pensions, growing Medicaid spending and a lack of dollars addressing urgent transportation infrastructure needs.

Those were all key issues a State Budget Crisis Task Force report identified last year as challenges compromising states’ fiscal stability.

The Task Force was assembled three years ago by co-chairs Richard Ravitch, former lieutenant governor of New York, and Paul Volcker, former chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve System’s Board of Governors, in an attempt to draw national attention to what they call “the eroding fiscal condition of states.”

The bipartisan coalition consists of numerous high-level officials with practical experience in fiscal policy, including former U.S. Secretary of State, Treasury and Labor George Shultz.
