Traffic congestion in the Philadelphia area has high costs, a report released Thursday by Washington D.C.-based transportation organization TRIP found.

In total, gridlock each year costs Philadelphians $3.4 billion, including 76 million gallons of wasted fuel and 156 million hours of time lost to traffic jams.

The report, “The Region’s Most Expensive Commutes,” identified the costliest corridors in the area when it comes to congestion.

I-676 from I-95 to I-76 ranked number one, costing the average driver $2,301 annually in lost time and gas.

PA 611 from the Pennsylvania Turnpike to I-95 was the second most expensive commute.

The Pennsylvania Governor’s Transportation Funding Advisory Commission found the state needs to spend an additional $552 million each year on projects like improved traffic management and increased highway capacity just to relieve current congestion.

That budget gap is expected to rise to $1.4 billion each year by 2030.

“Without a significant investment in Pennsylvania’s transportation system, drivers will continue to waste time and fuel, businesses will lose their competitive edge and quality of life will be diminished,” Pennsylvania Highway Information Association managing director Jason Wagner said in a statement.

Other high-priced commutes on the list include:

>> US 422 from US 202 to North of Egypt Road, which costs rush hour drivers 67 hours, 29 additional gallons of gas and $1,227 annually, or $24 weekly.

>> I-76 from I-676 to Belmont Ave, which costs rush hour drivers 58 hours, 25 additional gallons of gas and $1,074 annually, or $21 weekly.

>> I-95 from Betsy Ross Bridge—Aramingo Ave. to I-676-Spring Garden St., which costs rush hour drivers 58 hours, 25 additional gallons of gas and $1,074 annually, or $21 weekly.

>> US 202 from Swedesford Road to PA 401, which costs rush hour drivers 58 hours, 25 additional gallons of gas and $1,074 annually, or $21 weekly.

>> US 1 from the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-276) to I-76, which costs rush hour drivers 58 hours, 25 additional gallons of gas and $1,074 annually, or 21 hours weekly.
