A 12-year-old boy has reportedly told police he was raped in a bathroom at the South Street Seaport shopping complex yesterday.

Cops said the boy spent the afternoon shopping with his grandmother. At around 7 p.m. they sat down in the third floor food court. The boy went to a bathroom on the second floor about half an hour later.

The boy reportedly told police the bathroom was empty when he entered but as he approached a urinal a man came up to him and pulled him into a bathroom stall.

The man then allegedly performed oral sex on the boy. The boy told police it lasted only “seconds” before he backed away and left the bathroom. He said he and the suspect never exchanged words.

The boy reported the alleged attack to his grandmother after some hesitation. They reportedly discussed what to do and eventually approached a security guard and told him what happened, and the guard called 911.

Police said responding officers inquired after surveillance camera footage, but the mall’s security director told them many of the mall’s cameras are still out of service since Hurricane Sandy. He gave investigators what footage he did have, and police reportedly plan to seek footage from individual stores today.

The boy described his attacker as having olive or tan skin, dark hair with some bald spots, and a light-colored beard. He said the man was wearing a white t-shirt and gray sweatpants.
