Officers shoot naked man who allegedly went on violent rampage

Philadelphia police arrested a naked man Saturday morning after he allegedly went on a violent rampage and punched through the glass windshield of a police cruiser.

Lt. John Stanford said in an email that a patrol officer in the area of 22nd Street and Allegheny Avenue shortly before 5:15 a.m. saw a naked man acting in a “very unstable and violent manner.”

The officer said he saw the disrobed suspect throw a large metal newspaper box, break several large rocks and lie in the middle of the street in front of an oncoming SEPTA bus.

The officer notified police radio and requested backup.

He then followed the unclothed man north on 22nd Street and east on Westmoreland Street, where they were joined by other responders, including an officer armed with a Taser who attempted to help subdue the suspect.

The suspect allegedly turned on the first officer, slamming his hands on the driver’s side door of his patrol car.

Police said he then turned his rage on a second officer’s cruiser, punching the windshield, causing it to shatter and launching shards of glass into the car’s interior where the officer was seated.

That officer drew his weapon and, as he was seated in the driver’s seat, fired through the windshield, striking the suspect once each in the chest and elbow, according to investigators.

The naked man staggered to Westmoreland and Woodstock streets, where he collapsed.

Responding medics took the suspect to Temple University Hospital, where he was in critical but stable condition Sunday.

As a part of standard procedure, the officer who shot the man was placed on administrative duty pending investigations by the Internal Affairs Unit and District Attorney’s Office.
