A Lowell nurse and two teenage lifeguards saved the life of a 5-year-old boy this Fourth of July after he was found unresponsive in a swimming pool.

The lifeless child was pulled from the Raymond Lord Memorial Pool in North Common. The lifeguards then performed CPR on the boy, along with help from a trained nurse who assisted in stabilizing the child. He was then rushed to the hospital, the Lowell Sun reported.

S.J. Port, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, which operates the pool, praised the abilities of the pool employees.

“Our lifeguards are trained in CPR and were ready, but it was helpful to have an additional set of helping hands,” Port told the Sun.

The nurse left the pool before police were able to learn her name.

The child had slipped under the water while playing with friends, witnesses say.

“He was under the water for a while because they were wrestling, and when the kids came out they saw him under the water, so they jumped in the water,” one witness told WHDH.

The pool is now reopened with six lifeguards on patrol.
