Inspired by a local locomotive engineer who is fighting leukemia, the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Company and Dana-Farber are holding a bone marrow drive Tuesday at South Station.

Donors between the ages of 18 and 44 can stop by the main concourse between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to get their cheek swabbed and enter the national bone marrow registry.

Bob Evans, a locomotive engineer with the MBCRC, has been diagnosed with the blood disease. His wife Cathy Evans is a conductor on the Framingham line. The two met while working on the railroad 11 years ago, and married seven years ago.

Dana-Farber’s donor center is a fully accredited member of the National Marrow Donor Program. The NMDP has facilitated more than 35,000 marrow or blood stem cell transplants for patients who do not have matching donors in their families.
