Mexico now most obese country, not America

Just a few weeks after obesity was officially recognized as a disease by the American Medical Association, a new UN study reveals that America is no longer the most obese country.

According to the study, Mexico now holds the title. Americans was the most obese nation as recently as March. Approximately 70 percent of Mexicans are overweight and almost one-third is obese.

According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organizaion, Mexico as a 32.6 percent adult obesity rate. America’s adult obesity rate is 31.9 percent.

The number of obese Mexican teenagers has also tripled in the last decade bringing it up to one-third of the teenage population.

According to the study, as many as 70,000 people in Mexico die annually from diabetes, a number “roughly equal to the deaths authorities say are caused by more than six years of the country’s gangland wars.”

According to CBS News, the obesity crisis is mainly hitting the poorer populations of the country.

“The same people who are malnourished are the ones who are becoming obese,” said physician Abelardo Avila of Mexico’s National Nutrition Institute. “In the poor classes we have obese parents and malnourished children. The worst thing is the children are becoming programmed for obesity. It’s a very serious epidemic.”

The high obesity rate doesn’t come as a major surprise. Two years ago, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) called on Mexico to consider its overweight people a national emergency.

“The result is that for many Mexicans, particularly in urban areas or in the northern states, switching to healthier diets is becoming increasingly difficult,” UN expert Olivier de Shutter said in a reporter on Mexican agriculture and nutrition that was issued two years ago.
