UPDATE: The FDNY is now reporting a total of nine injured: three victims in critical condition, two with serious injuries and four with minor injuries. The victims are being treated at Cornell and Bellevue Hospitals.

Two firefighters also sustained minor injuries, fire officials said.

Metro’s original story is below.

Authorities are reporting a residential building collapse at 17 Pike Street in lower Manhattan, apparently caused by an explosion on the first floor.

Fire department officials said that the first-floor fire is out but they are still securing the scene, and searches are still underway for victims.

The FDNY reported six victims thus far. Four were in critical condition and were taken to Cornell Hospital and two were taken to Bellevue Hospital with minor injuries. The NYPD said victims are being treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire appears to have originated in a first floor apartment at the rear of the building around 12:45 p.m., authorities said. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but authorities say it sounds as though overuse due to an excess of people in the building taxed the electrical system.

NYPD officials report that despite the partial collapse, the building appears to be stable and structurally sound.

The fire reportedly caused the ceiling of the first-floor apartment to cave in. The building has five residential stories with commercial space on the ground floor.
