Brooklyn man loses eye in vicious hammer attack
A Brooklyn musician lost an eye after he was viciously attacked by a stranger with a hammer last week, NBC reports.
Dru Barnes was walking to his home in Greenpoint from a friend’s house in Bed-Stuy on July 11 at 10 a.m. when he got lost, he told NBC. That’s when he was assaulted by the attacker, who swung at him with a hammer and struck him in the eye.
Barnes believes he was followed by the attacker but he does not know what the motive was.
Police say there is some surveillance video of the incident and they have retrieved the hammer, but they do not have a suspect.
“This guy’s on the loose, this can happen again. Clearly, he’s deranged,” Gerrit Vooren, Barnes’ friend, told NBC.
Barnes must now undergo multiple surgeries.
Friends have set up a Facebook page dedicated to posting updates about Barnes’ recovery and collecting donations. They say they are determined to spread the word about the attack in hopes of catching the suspect. The page has nearly 700 followers.
