Keara Lopes and her sister-in-law Leka Sanders have done the usual birthday gifting, so this year, they decided to celebrate the annual event with something better than a gift card or a piece of jewelry.

Instead, the two celebrated Lopes’ 36th birthday today by doling out 36 homemade sandwiches and water bottles to homeless in downtown Boston.

“I definitely think it’d be great if people did more to give back,” said Sanders, who said it was Lopes’ idea to do the good deed. ”You rarely get to hear about people doing anything good; about positive stories.”

The pair woke up early to hand out the turkey and bologna sandwiches this morning, then headed to the Pine Street Inn and Rosie’s Place in the afternoon.

Those who received the free sandwiches, which also came with chips and bananas, were appreciative, Lopes said. “They were hungry, and they said ‘thank you,’” she said.

“We both left (the Pine Street Inn) with tears of joy in our eyes. It was a great feeling being able to celebrate her 36th birthday by helping other people out,” said Lopes, who also got help from her 11-year-old son. “We’ll definitely plan to do it again in the future.”
