Separated teenage sweethearts marry after 70 years

It started off as the typical teenage love story. Bob Humphries met Bernie Bluett when his family went on vacation in southwest England. Bluett teased Humphries mercilessly, a way of fending off his adolescent advances.

“Then I saw him when I was 17, and he was 18, and he was this handsome soldier in khakis and the hormones were running wild. I thought, I’m going to marry that man one day,” Bluett, 87, told the Daily Mail.

And then the story goes from the routine boy meets girl moment to an ending that could only be dreamt up in Hollywood.

The couple dated before the outbreak of World War II forced them to go their separate ways. Still madly in love, Humphries, 89, often wrote to Bluett, even sending a written proposal of marriage. Unfortunately, Bluett never received any of the letters because her parents disapproved of the relationship.

Both Humphries and Bluett accepted the reality of the situation and moved on with their lives, both finding love elsewhere. Now more than 70 years later, the teenage sweethearts reconnected after the deaths of their spouses. Proving that sometimes teenage love is rooted in more than just lust, the couple made good on Humphries’s proposal and tied the knot.

I call dibs on the screenplay rights.
