Homeless man arrested in brutal stabbing of woman in Powelton
Philadelphia police on Wednesday arrested a homeless man for allegedly slashing a woman in broad daylight during a brutal stabbing in Powelton Village.
Police said officers shortly after 2 p.m. responded to a radio call reporting a person with a weapon on the 3100 block of Spring Garden Street.
There, they found a woman, 26, bleeding from several puncture wounds and gashes to her chest, abdomen, knee and wrist.
The woman was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
Witnesses told investigators they saw a man pushing the female east on Spring Garden toward 31st Street, then making “jabbing motions” into the woman’s body.
The suspect was then seen fleeing on foot east on Spring Garden Street.
Officers scoured the area and saw a male matching the offender’s description on the 3000 block of Spring Garden Street.
Police said the suspect was identified as Gary Johnson, a 46-year-old homeless man who also goes by the pseudonym Anthony Johnson.
Officers stopped Johnson and allegedly observed his hand was bleeding.
He was treated at Presbyterian Hospital, then taken into custody.
Johnson is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possessing an instrument of crime, simple assault and reckless endangerment.
