Kristin Davis, the former ‘Manhattan Madam’ and current City Comptroller candidate, was arrested today on federal charges of selling prescription pills, federal law enforcement officials said.

Davis, 38, is accused of selling drugs “to a known drug dealer on repeated occasions in exchange for cash,” Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said.

Bharara said prescription drug overdoses kill more people than heroin and cocaine combined and that such drug abuse is “the fastest-growing drug problem in this country.”

“This office has a zero-tolerance policy toward anyone who helps to spread this plague at any level,” Bharara said.

FBI Assistant Director in Charge George Venizelos said Davis is charged with selling prescription medications, including oxycodone, on four separate occasions over four months to an informant.

He called Davis’ alleged drug-dealing “especially unbecoming for a person seeking public office in the City of New York.”

Davis initially gained infamy as the “Manhattan Madam” when she said she provided then-Governor Eliot Spitzer with female escorts. Davis and Spitzer were both running for City Comptroller, along with as-yet scandal-free Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer.

The criminal complaint detailing the charges against Davis. The four drug deals took place this year, according to the complaint, over January through April 2013.

The person she was selling the drugs to was cooperating with the FBI and wearing a wire. Davis was recorded talking about the drugs she was selling, which included Xanax, Ambien, amphetamines and oxycodone, as well as a “skeletal muscle relaxant” called Carisoprodol, which federal officials said is often combined with date rape drugs.
