A 23-year-old Springfield man who was shot and killed by a Massachusetts state trooper early Sunday morning has been identified as Wayne R. Edwards II.

The trooper is being investigating for shooting Edwards after he allegedly “became combative” during a traffic stop on Route 91.

According to a police spokesman, Edwards allegedly drove a 2002 BMW 320i past the trooper at a high rate of speed about 12:22 a.m. Sunday.

The trooper pulled over Edwards, who had a 22-year-old female passenger, and asked for his license and registration.

At that point, Edwards allegedly “became combative and a physical altercation between he and the trooper occurred.”

According to police, that’s when the trooper pulled out his gun and shot Edwards. Police did not say whether Edwards brandished a weapon at the driver, and did not give specifics about the dispute.

After Edwards was shot, the woman, who was not identified, jumped out of the car, and Edwards began driving eastbound.

The trooper followed the Edwards’ BMW for a short distance, at which point the BMW crashed into a barrier. Edwards was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Inside the BMW, troopers located a loaded 25-caliber handgun on the driver’s seat and a loaded 40-caliber handgun under the front driver’s seat. Both guns had obliterated serial numbers, police said.

The trooper, who joined the department in 2012 after graduating in the most recent academy class, has been put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by State Police and the Hampden County district attorney.

Police declined to identify the trooper.
