Police on Tuesday arrested a suspect in the July 17 robbery of an 81-year-old woman, who was followed from a South Philadelphia check cashing shop and assaulted.

Investigators said, following the release of several surveillance videos showing the suspect, they received anonymous tips identifying the alleged mugger as Charles Jennings, 34, of the 1500 block of Dickinson Street.

Jennings allegedly first encountered the victim around 1 p.m. as she cashed a check inside United Check Cashing at 1123 S. Broad St.

Police said Jennings waited for the woman to complete her transaction, then followed her to the 1300 block of South Juniper Street.

There, Jennings allegedly grabbed the woman, threw her to the ground and snatched a wallet that was hanging around her neck.

He then fled on foot west on Wharton Street.

Jennings was arraigned Wednesday and bail was set at 10 percent of $35,000.

He is charged with aggravated assault, robbery with the infliction of serious bodily injury, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, simple assault and reckless endangerment.

Court documents reveal Jennings has amassed a sizable criminal history.

He was in 1997 sentenced to 6 to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to robbery, criminal conspiracy and carrying an unlicensed firearm.

Jennings was arrested several times over the past two years for simple assault, harassment and robbery offenses, but charges were each time withdrawn.

Jennings is next due in court Aug. 29 for a preliminary hearing.
