Earlier this month, a woman was picked up in an unlicensed taxi in Boston’s Seaport district, and then taken to Newton where she was raped.

The Boston Herald reports the Aug. 6 incident stayed under wraps because of a battle between state police and Boston cops.

“In retrospect, we should have proactively released some information contemporaneous with the reported assault,” David Procopio, state police spokesman, told the Herald. “The responsibility for doing so was somewhat muddied by the involvement of different agencies, but that’s no excuse; reports of this type of crime are too important to worry about jurisdictional issues.”

The victim was picked up outside a string of clubs on Northern Avenue, and then taken to Daly Memorial Rink in Newton where she was raped, according to authorities. Now, many are hoping police pay more attention to the area, which has grown in recent years.

“It’s certainly something we’re concerned about,” Police commissioner Ed Davis said, referring to the jurisdiction issue. “We’ve made our case over and over.”

The report did not say whether the cab driver was arrested.
