Health officials are urging some customers at an Upper West Side supermarket to get a Hepatitis A vaccination after a food handler at the store tested positive for the virus.

Any customers who ate chopped, ready-to-eat fruit from the Westside Market at 97th Street and Broadway between Aug. 9 and Aug. 22 are considered at risk and should get the vaccine as a precautionary measure, according to a statement from the city’s Health Department.

Hepatitis A is spread by eating food that has been contaminated with traces of fecal matter from an infected person. Symptoms include jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea.

People typically develop symptoms one month after they are exposed to the virus, but a vaccination within 14 days of exposure could prevent the disease, health officials said.

Westside Market estimates that it sells about 100 ready-to-eat fruit containers per day. All of the remaining fruit containers with expiration dates during the at-risk period have been destroyed.
