While Harvard University got beat out for the No. 1 spot on a recent list of the nation’s best colleges, many Boston-area schools did make it into the Top 50.

Seven colleges and universities in Greater Boston made it onto the 2014 best colleges list put out by U.S. News & World Report.

Princeton topped the list, with Harvard coming in second.

“Harvard’s extensive library system houses the oldest collection in the United States and the largest private collection in the world,” the magazine write-up said. “There is more to the school than endless stacks, though: Harvard’s athletic teams compete in the Ivy League, and every football season ends with ‘The Game,’ an annual matchup between storied rivals Harvard and Yale.”

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology came in at No. 7 while Tufts University ranked 28, Boston College placed 31, Brandeis was next at 32, Boston University ranked as No. 41 and Northeastern University was listed as No. 49.

Besides ranking within the top 50 best national colleges, Northeastern ranked No. 3 on the U.S. News ranking of up-and-coming schools.

In a separate ranking of the nation’s best liberal arts colleges, three Massachusetts schools ranked within the Top 10, with Williams College in Williamstown earning the top spot. Amherst College ranked No. 2 and Wellesley College ranked No. 7.
