Gay lawmaker runs ad about coming out to his Tea Party Republican dad
A new political ad running in Massachusetts features some pretty adorable father-son banter between a gay liberal son and his Tea Party dad.
Carl Sciortino, a Democrat running in the special election for Massachusetts’ 5th Congressional District, is featured in the ad with his dad, Carl Sciortino Sr., who is apparently a staunch Tea Party Republican.
The ad opens with Sciortino Jr., who is openly gay, talking about how he’ll “never forget that conversation” coming out to his father — “as a Massachusetts liberal.”
“And he’s proud of it!” his father interjects, aghast, pictured in what appears to be an elk lodge.
They volley back and forth, relaying Sciortino’s political record and achievements.
Sciortino Sr. references the Buffer Zone Law that he says his son wrote, which protects women entering abortion clinics from harassment.
The elder Sciortino notes that the law made its way all the way up to the Supreme Court.
“I was kinda proud of that,” he adds.
Watch and be heart-warmed.
