A day after the president formally endorsed Democratic nominee Bill de Blasio for mayor, word on the street is the two bastions of Democratic hope are scheduled to meet face-to-face on Tuesday.

President Barack Obama is in town for the United Nations General Assembly, and gave a lengthy address Tuesday morning on the relationship between U.S. and Iran.

According to Politico, he and de Blasio will have a very quick chat and photo-opp at a Democratic National Committee reception at the Waldorf Astoria Tuesday night before the president returns to Washington, D.C.

De Blasio’s opponents’ latest attacks have echoed those leveled against Obama in his early days. GOP candidate Joe Lhota and Independent candidate Adolfo Carrion, Jr., seized on a New York Times story Sunday about de Blasio’s support and admiration for Nicaraguan sandinistas as a young activist, ringing alarm bells over the possibility of a “Democratic socialist” leading a city in which the Democratic candidate is polling with triple the support of the Republican one.

By Tuesday, a “Democratic insider” had apparently informed the New York Post that controversial group ACORN — once a very prominent thorn in the Obama campaign’s side — had been “plotting” for over ten years to get de Blasio in the mayor’s office.

“De Blasio was a big ACORN project,” the Democratic insider reportedly told the Post.

At a press conference accepting the endorsement of Comptroller John Liu — the third of his primary opponents to line up behind him — de Blasio called these anti-leftist attacks by the Lhota campaign “increasingly silly,” and on Twitter, his spokesman Dan Levitan offered his own virtual eye-roll.
