600 pumpkins stolen from Long Island farm
Some enterprising thieves were thinking outside the box when they pulled off a heist at a Long Island farm last weekend.
The loot? Pumpkins. Lots and lots of pumpkins.
About 600 of the iconic seasonal squash vanished from the Rottkamp Farm in Calverton sometime between Sept. 27 and 30. Riverhead Town Police put their market value at about $4,200.
A detective assigned to the case speculated that the thieves might have driven the pumpkins into Manhattan to sell them at a much higher price than they would fetch on Long Island.
“Otherwise, that’s a lot of pumpkin pie,” he said.
